Introducing Asher’s House Co-Op: A New Model for Community, Creativity, and Care

Huntsville, AL — Local entrepreneur and former retail executive Steve Calvert is launching a bold new initiative that merges his decades of experience in business, branding, and ministry into a nonprofit effort rooted in personal purpose and community transformation. Inspired by his son, Asher, who lives with autism and will likely need lifelong support, Calvert is founding Asher’s House Co-Op—a nonprofit cooperative committed to meeting essential human needs while building generational wealth and wellness for vulnerable families.

“At the heart of this movement is my son,” says Calvert. “Asher’s House is more than a nonprofit. It’s a community model built on dignity, equity, and creativity. One that supports people with disabilities, working families, and local artists—not just with charity, but with opportunity.”

Core Focus Areas Include:

  • Affordable housing through ADUs and tiny home developments in and around urban centers

  • Access to food and clean water

  • Meaningful employment and creative expression

  • Wholeness—mind, body, and spirit

Calvert is already working with investors and city partners to establish accessible housing solutions close to where people live, work, and create. But the Co-Op’s reach goes further, offering a sustainable business ecosystem with multiple revenue streams:

  1. Donations – from supporters who believe in inclusive community development

  2. Memberships – offering discounts, governance rights, and marketplace access

  3. Marketplace Sales – featuring curated, commission-based products and services

  4. Grants – with expansion planned once a dedicated grant writer is onboarded

A Marketplace with Purpose

At the center of the Co-Op is Calvert Studio HSV, a business accelerator and creative agency that offers branding, corporate apparel, and artist representation. Members enjoy deep discounts on services and gain access to a growing ecosystem of independent creators. Current ventures include:

  • Taylor Williams, a custom, American-sourced clothing line in partnership with master tailor Derrick Hopkins

  • Corporate Apparel & Sourcing (Name TBD) – tailored uniform solutions and branded merchandise for businesses

  • Autumn Mott Calvert Art & Photography – fine art and creative services led by the Calvert Studios President

  • Second Chances, a secondhand retail initiative supporting local food access

“We’re building a model that empowers small business owners and artists to thrive outside of systems that exploit and undervalue people,” Calvert explains. “After being fired from a national retailer just before medical leave—despite over $4.5 million in sales—I knew it was time to create something radically better.”

Asher’s House Co-Op is where creativity meets community. Where economic justice meets spiritual wholeness. And where families like Calvert’s—and countless others—can find purpose, partnership, and peace.
